Sustainable Shopping Know Hows

Sustainable Shopping: Where to Start?

There’s a big movement for change in the world right now, with the protection of our planet and a focus on sustainability taking the forefront. So when it comes to shopping for clothes, it’s more important than ever to think about how we can be as sustainable as

That’s why we’ve compiled our top tips for sustainable shopping, so you can make sure you’re taking the right steps. Because as much as the responsibility lies with brands to be
conscious, sustainable and ethical, it also lies with shoppers who have an influence with how they spend. Read our sustainable shopping know-hows below.

Take a look at your shopping habits

This doesn’t just have to apply to clothes, but it’s a great place to start. Becoming conscious of your shopping habits can be the first step in addressing how you can improve. You shouldn’t just be thinking about where you purchase your clothes from, but how often you’re buying them. Are they well thought out pieces that will be worn on repeat, or are they cheap, trend driven items designed for just a couple of wears?

Sustainable shopping practices

Be curious

Investigate the story behind the brands you’re purchasing from and don’t be afraid to be curious. What do they tell you about how their clothes are made, or the materials they use? Here at Lavender Hill Clothing, we endeavour to be transparent so you know exactly what goes into each garment and how that impacts our planet and its people. We think it’s your right as a customer to know this - and our responsibility to use the best practices possible.

Look for sustainable fibres

That brings us to the next important point. Choosing natural, sustainable fibres where possible. Modal, linen, organic cotton and cashmere are all fabrics that use much less water during production compared to their non-biodegradable counterparts (like nylon, polyester and viscose). These fabrics are also much less likely to have been treated with toxic chemicals which aren't healthy for our skin, or the environment. How to shop sustainably

Buy items designed to last

This is an important one: buying an item that is designed to last (if it’s accessible to you) can make the world of difference. Spending money on a cheap garment that falls apart after a couple of washes has to make you question the wellbeing of those who made it, and the waste it creates. Whether you create a capsule wardrobe with core pieces
designed to last, or simply re-think where you buy your clothes, choosing not to purchase fast-fashion could be the real difference you make with your shopping habits.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions

As a paying customer, you have every right to enquire about production, delivery and materials. It’s all well and good to offer a range of sustainable clothes or to use solely sustainable fabrics, but if that approach to sustainability doesn’t extend to other impactful parts of the business - such as packaging, delivery or labour - then it’s time to ask questions. If you have any questions about Lavender Hill Clothing and how we work, explore our FAQs or contact us.
