What is Lyocell?

Just like modal- another form of rayon and a fabric we regularly use at Lavender Hill - lyocell has long been considered as a more sustainable choice than the likes of nylon, polyester and even cotton. Made from wood cellulose or pulp, its soft-to-the-touch finish, eco credibilities and durability make it a firm favourite with both brands and customers.

How is Lyocell made?

Another similarity between modal and lyocell is how it’s made. As with the former, lyocell begins with wood; predominantly from fast-growing trees such as birch, eucalyptus and oak. The wood is harvested and ground into a pulp and mixed with a chemical which leaves a sticky liquid. This is then filtered and pumped through spinnerets - thimble-shaped devices used to form fabric strands - resulting in long, thin fibres. These fibres are then washed, dried and separated before being cut into the desired length.

What are the Benefits of Lyocell?

Naturally derived

The lyocell Lavender Hill uses - TENCEL™Lyocell from Austrian company Lenzing - is harvested from certified and controlled wood sources.

Sustainably sourced

All of the wood Lenzing uses in its production of TENCEL™ Lyocell is sourced from sustainably managed forests.

Sustainably produced

Using what is known as a ‘closed loop production process’, Lenzing is able to reuse more than 99% of the water and solvent used in the creation of TENCEL™ Lyocell fibres. This has even won the company the Technology Award for Sustainable Development in the European Business Awards for the Environment.

Made in Austria

Unlike some fibres which are produced in far-flung places, TENCEL™ Lyocell is made in Austria. As all of our products are made in Europe and the UK, this results in a smaller carbon footprint.

Biodegradable

TENCEL™ Lyocell has been certified as biodegradable and compostable.

Breathable

As lyocell is derived from natural sources, the fibres are structured to regulate the absorption and release of moisture which helps to ensure the fabric is not only breathable but supports the body’s natural temperature.

Anti-bacterial

The lack of moisture being absorbed by the fabric means that it is harder for bacteria to grow, meaning you are less likely to sweat than if you were wearing polyester, nylon or cotton.

Gentle on the skin

Not only is TENCEL™ Lyocell extremely soft but its smooth fibres make it a great choice for those with sensitive skin.

Drapes beautifully

These smooth fibres also ensure that lyocell drapes beautifully, creating a flattering silhouette. They also make the fabric a popular alternative to silk or cotton.

How Do You Wash Lyocell?

It is worth treating lyocell with care. While some people recommend hand-washing it, if that is not possible then opt for no higher than 30 degrees. Many machines have a delicate or hand-wash setting. As a fabric that is sensitive to heat, it is best to avoid using tumble dryers at all costs. As lyocell is lightweight it shouldn’t take too long to dry naturally. Lastly, ensure you don’t scorch your items with an iron.If you’re unsure, always opt for the coldest setting.
